Course Description

Overview

Mastering the theoretical foundations, system architectures, and practical engineering of software systems is essential to shaping the digital infrastructure of modern society. The Computer Science BSc at King's College London provides a comprehensive, research-led technical education delivered within the Department of Informatics in the Faculty of Natural, Mathematical & Engineering Sciences. The curriculum spans fundamental aspects of computing, including software development paradigms, algorithm design, computer systems architecture, database management, and formal logic. Taught by world-class academics at the heart of London, students explore how software interacts with hardware, moving from microprocessors and low-level electronics up to distributed cloud networks and intelligent algorithms. Project-based learning forms a core component of the degree, emphasizing collaborative team-based software engineering alongside individual technical problem-solving. Flexible study pathways allow scholars to tailor their final year with advanced specialized topics, opt for an industrial placement year, or participate in global study abroad opportunities. This program is ideally suited for logically minded, analytical individuals who wish to build resilient software systems, master computational principles, and pursue high-impact technical careers across software architecture, cybersecurity, systems engineering, and technology strategy.

What You'll Learn

  • Core programming paradigms, object-oriented design principles, algorithm design, and computational complexity analysis

  • Fundamental mathematical principles for computing, including discrete mathematics, elementary logic, graph theory, and formal methods

  • Computer systems architecture, low-level hardware interfaces, microprocessors, operating systems, and computer networking principles

  • Principles of software engineering, system modeling, testing methodologies, version control, and collaborative agile project frameworks

  • Database system architectures, relational database management, data modeling, SQL query optimization, and modern data engineering techniques

  • Fundamentals of artificial intelligence, machine learning methodologies, automated reasoning, and optimization algorithms

  • Cybersecurity principles, network security protocols, cryptography, system vulnerability assessment, and secure coding practices

  • Human-centered computing concepts, user interface design, accessibility standards, and web technology frameworks

  • Major final-year individual capstone project designing, implementing, and evaluating a substantial, original software engineering or research system

Learning Outcomes

Graduates will possess an in-depth understanding of computational theory, algorithm design principles, software architecture, and hardware-software interactions. They will demonstrate the capability to evaluate complex computational problems, design optimized algorithmic solutions, build secure end-to-end software applications, and manage full software engineering lifecycles. Students acquire strong practical competencies in multi-paradigm programming, database configuration, low-level hardware debugging, and system verification through laboratory practicals, team development projects, and code reviews. Furthermore, scholars master the ability to communicate technical system architectures and software specifications clearly, working effectively in multi-disciplinary development teams and conveying complex technical concepts to non-specialist stakeholders. Through research-led teaching, collaborative project work, and industry-oriented capstone projects, graduates cultivate the technical precision, logical rigor, and creative problem-solving agility required to excel as software engineers, systems architects, cybersecurity specialists, data engineers, IT consultants, or postgraduate research scholars.
