Overview

Combining creative and logical thinking sits at the heart of computer science, a discipline that shapes new software, systems and technologies across nearly every industry. The BSc (Hons) Computer Science at the University of Bath builds a solid theoretical and practical foundation across software systems design, artificial intelligence, computational mathematics, computer graphics and human-computer interaction, before letting students specialise in their area of genuine interest. Teaching is delivered by academics who carry out active research in fields such as artificial intelligence, mathematical foundations and visual computing, giving students the chance to work alongside them on their own research project. Students benefit from purpose-built teaching labs, including a maker lab for exploring both software and physical artefact projects, alongside access to specialist hardware such as GPUs and multiple cloud computing services. A dedicated skills development programme runs through the first two years, helping students understand their personal strengths and connect them to real industry opportunities through employer events. The course suits students who enjoy both creative and logical thinking and want genuine flexibility to shape their degree, regularly meeting with an academic specialising in their chosen field. It particularly suits those aiming for careers applying computer science methods to new and emerging problems, with recent graduates going on to roles at Microsoft, Google and Goldman Sachs.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to apply computer science principles across software design, artificial intelligence, computational mathematics and visual computing to solve real, emerging technical problems. They will be equipped to use specialist hardware and cloud computing resources to analyse complex, data-intensive processes, drawing on both theoretical grounding and hands-on laboratory experience. Through a second-year group project and an individually supervised final-year project, students will develop the collaborative, technical and research skills needed to design and build genuine software and physical artefact solutions. Graduates will leave with a BCS-accredited, industry-relevant computer science education, well prepared for careers spanning software development, technology consultancy and hardware engineering, or for further postgraduate research.

Requirements

Kuwait: High School / Shahadat Al-Thanawiya Al-A'ama (General Secondary Education Certificate) is not accepted for direct undergraduate entry. Completion of a recognized foundation course (or A-Levels / equivalent qualification) is required
UKVI IELTS (Academic) 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0 (or approved SELT equivalent)
Minimum overall average of 70% in the Foundation Programme required to progress to Year 1 of the Bachelor's degree
Completion of the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) / English Language Module within the Foundation Programme with a minimum score of 60% with no section below 50%
Minimum score of 65% in Mathematics and 40% in all other modules in the Foundation Programme
