Overview
Computer technology shapes almost every part of modern life, from the devices and applications people use daily to the way data is gathered, stored and analysed. Studying BSc (Hons) Computer Science at Loughborough University gives students both the theoretical and practical foundations needed to work in this fast-moving field. The degree is accredited by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, and is shaped by an Industrial Liaison Committee that brings in the views of leading UK and international companies. Core study covers logic, programming, software engineering, algorithms and artificial intelligence, while optional modules in areas such as robotics and network security let students tailor the degree to their own interests. Learning is supported by six computer laboratories with round-the-clock access, specialist networking and GPU hardware, and a robotics lab equipped with humanoid and NAO robots, quadcopters and e-pucks. Students complete a research project under academic supervision, and an optional professional placement year or study abroad year is available. The course suits those who want a flexible, well-developed approach to problem solving, and graduates gain technical depth along with professional, managerial and presentation skills.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will understand computing from the architecture of hardware and operating systems through to the design of algorithms, software and networked applications. They will be able to design, build and test programs using a range of languages and engineering practices, and to apply logic and mathematics to analyse the efficiency and correctness of their solutions. Students will gain working knowledge of artificial intelligence and machine learning, including the ethical issues surrounding intelligent systems, and will understand how security considerations influence design decisions at every level. Experiments in virtualised environments and laboratory work develop practical confidence, while team projects build collaboration, time management and the ability to meet strict deadlines. The individual research project demonstrates analysis, design and programming skills applied to a substantial problem. Optional modules allow students to specialise in areas such as robotics, cyber security, cloud computing or data analysis, and a placement year or study abroad option provides additional professional and international experience to support their chosen career path.
