Course Description

Overview:

The BSc (Hons) Computer Science (Algorithms and Optimisation) explores the principles and techniques used to design efficient computational solutions. At the University of Liverpool, the course develops a strong understanding of algorithms alongside the mathematical and computational approaches needed to analyse problems, improve performance and make effective use of computing resources.

What You'll Learn:

  • Core principles of computer science and computational problem-solving

  • Algorithm design, analysis and evaluation

  • Data structures and their role in efficient computation

  • Mathematical concepts that support algorithmic reasoning

  • Optimisation techniques for improving computational solutions

  • Approaches to assessing the efficiency, complexity and performance of algorithms

  • Programming concepts and practical implementation of computational methods

  • Methods for tackling complex problems through systematic algorithmic thinking

  • The relationship between theoretical computer science and practical computing applications

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course, students will be able to explain fundamental concepts in computer science and apply structured approaches to computational problems. They will be able to design and implement algorithms, select appropriate data structures, and assess alternative solutions according to factors such as efficiency and complexity. Students will also be able to use mathematical and analytical reasoning to investigate algorithmic problems and identify opportunities for optimisation. The course will enable them to evaluate computational approaches critically, recognise the trade-offs involved in different solutions, and develop clearer, more efficient methods for solving challenging problems. Through combining theoretical understanding with practical application, students will build the ability to reason systematically about algorithms and optimisation within the wider field of computer science.
