Course Description

Overview

Artificial intelligence is reshaping how software is designed and how problems are solved, and building genuine expertise in the field requires strong computer science fundamentals alongside specialist AI knowledge. The BSc (Hons) Computer Science (Artificial Intelligence) at the University of Hertfordshire combines core programming and systems knowledge with focused study of machine learning, neural networks and robotics, drawing on the expertise of the school's internationally recognised AI research staff. Based in Spectra, the university's new home for physics, engineering and computer science, the course is accredited by BCS and offers strong industry links alongside optional work placements or study abroad. It suits students who want deep technical expertise in AI, with the flexibility to switch to a related computer science pathway after the first year.

What You'll Learn

  • Programming, discrete structures and the mathematical foundations of computer science

  • Databases, operating systems, networks and large-scale software development

  • The analysis, design and construction of knowledge-based and expert systems

  • Machine learning, neural networks and artificial life

  • Advanced AI methods for reasoning, planning and acting in uncertain environments

  • Intelligent adaptive systems that respond and adjust to changing environments

  • Robotics, including hardware control and behavioural AI architectures

  • An individual final-year project addressing a real problem in artificial intelligence

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to apply core computer science principles alongside specialist AI methods to design and build knowledge-based, adaptive and robotic systems. They will be equipped to use advanced techniques in machine learning, neural computing and intelligent systems to solve complex, real-world problems. Through team-based projects and an individual final-year project, students will develop strong technical, research and problem-solving skills grounded in current AI research. Graduates will leave with a BCS-accredited, industry-relevant skill set, well prepared for careers as AI engineers, machine learning specialists, robotics engineers or software developers across a wide range of sectors.
