Course Description

Overview

Computer networking underpins nearly every part of modern life, from smartphone apps to the secure systems that global businesses depend on, making the ability to defend and design these networks a genuinely valuable skill. The BSc (Hons) Computer Science (Cyber Security and Networks) at the University of Hertfordshire builds a broad computer science foundation before specialising in network protocols, security management and digital forensics, with teaching informed by real industry practice. Based in Spectra, the university's new home for physics, engineering and computer science, the course is accredited by BCS and offers strong links to major technology employers alongside optional work placements or study abroad. It suits students passionate about tackling cyber threats and building resilient systems, with the flexibility to switch to a related computer science pathway after the first year.

What You'll Learn

  • Programming, discrete structures and the mathematical foundations of computer science

  • Operating systems, networks and command-line configuration skills

  • Network protocols and architecture, exploring how modern networks are designed and secured

  • Cyber security principles, including cryptography, authentication and defence against attacks

  • Incident response and digital forensics, including identifying and containing security breaches

  • Information security management, covering risk assessment and organisational security policy

  • Software architecture and large-scale programming practices

  • An individual final-year project addressing a real cyber security or networking challenge

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to design, implement and defend computer networks, applying strong technical knowledge of protocols, architecture and security principles. They will be equipped to identify, assess and respond to cyber security incidents, using digital forensics and risk management techniques to protect systems and data. Through team-based projects and an individual final-year project, students will develop practical, industry-relevant technical and problem-solving skills. Graduates will leave with a BCS-accredited, in-demand skill set, well prepared for careers across cyber security, network engineering and IT consultancy in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.
