Overview

Cyber-attacks and security risks are a growing concern for organisations everywhere, making skilled cyber security professionals genuinely sought after across almost every sector. The BSc (Hons) Cyber Security at Nottingham Trent University builds a strong foundation in network and systems technology before developing specialist expertise in detecting security threats, investigating computer-based crime, and preserving digital evidence. Students train in industry-standard facilities, including isolated network and security labs, and benefit from strong local industry links alongside the option of a paid, year-long work placement. The course suits students who want a practically grounded route into cyber security, with plenty of opportunity to test their own solutions to real security challenges.

  • How to identify security risks and develop preventative measures

  • The collection and preservation of digital evidence in computer-based crime investigations

  • System administration with a focus on maintaining security

  • Broader security issues facing organisations and the steps needed to guard against breaches

  • Advanced topics in cyber security, including digital investigations and security in practice

  • Specialist options such as cloud computing, the Internet of Things, or information systems management

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to identify security risks within technological systems and design effective preventative measures to address them. They will be equipped to collect and interpret computer-based evidence as part of investigating digital crime, and to manage systems with a strong focus on maintaining their security. Through hands-on practical sessions and access to industry-standard facilities, students will develop the investigative, analytical and problem-solving skills needed to test and refine their own security solutions. Graduates will leave with a solid understanding of how organisations protect themselves from security breaches, along with the technical and professional skills to pursue further study or a career defending digital systems and infrastructure.
