Course Description

Overview:

BSc (Hons) Environmental Geoscience examines the Earth’s physical systems and the environmental processes that shape them. The course brings together geological and environmental perspectives to develop an understanding of how natural systems function and how scientific knowledge can be applied to environmental challenges. At the University of Glasgow, students build a foundation for exploring interactions between Earth materials, landscapes, natural processes, and environmental change.

What You'll Learn:

  • Fundamental principles of geology and Earth science, including the materials, structures, and processes that shape the planet.

  • Environmental systems and the physical processes operating within and across the Earth’s surface.

  • Relationships between geological processes and environmental conditions, including the ways these systems influence one another.

  • Methods used to investigate, interpret, and evaluate evidence relating to Earth and environmental science.

  • Scientific approaches to understanding environmental change and assessing processes that affect natural systems.

  • Application of geological and environmental knowledge to questions involving the Earth’s resources, landscapes, and changing environments.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course, students will be able to explain key geological and environmental concepts and describe how major Earth processes contribute to the development and evolution of natural environments. They will be able to interpret scientific information and use appropriate evidence to investigate environmental and geoscientific questions. Students will also develop the ability to connect geological observations with broader environmental processes, evaluate information critically, and apply scientific principles when considering complex Earth-system issues. The course will support an integrated understanding of the physical Earth, enabling students to recognise connections between geological materials, surface processes, environmental conditions, and environmental change.
