Course Description

Overview:

The BSc (Hons) Geography and Sport Science combines the study of Earth’s physical and human processes with the scientific examination of sport and exercise. At Loughborough University, students develop an integrated understanding of how people, places, environments, physical activity and sporting behaviour interact.

What You'll Learn:

  • Foundations of human and physical geography, including how social and environmental processes shape places and regions.

  • Core sport and exercise science, with attention to physiology, psychology and biomechanics.

  • The social dimensions of sport, including sociological perspectives, coaching and pedagogy.

  • Physical activity and health, alongside psychological and social influences on participation and performance.

  • Geographical research approaches, academic practice and subject-specific professional skills.

  • Opportunities to investigate either human geography, physical geography, or a balanced combination of both as studies progress.

  • Field-based research and practical approaches that connect geographical concepts with real-world environments.

  • The potential relationship between geography and sport science through independent research.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course, students will be able to explain key concepts and debates across geography and sport science and evaluate how physical, social and environmental factors influence people and places. They will be able to apply appropriate research methods to geographical and sport-related questions, interpret evidence critically, and communicate findings effectively. Students will also be able to analyse sport and exercise through physiological, psychological, biomechanical and sociological perspectives, while recognising connections between the two disciplines. They will develop the academic, analytical and practical skills needed to investigate complex issues independently and make informed interpretations based on relevant evidence.
