Overview

This foundation-level programme builds the scientific grounding and academic confidence students need before progressing onto the BSc (Hons) Human Nutrition and Dietetics degree at Cardiff Metropolitan University, a professionally approved route toward registration as a dietitian. It serves as a preparatory year of study, strengthening core scientific knowledge ahead of entry into the honours degree, which combines academic study with clinical placement experience in Wales. Successful completion allows progression into the first year of the degree.

What You'll Learn

  • Core scientific principles relevant to nutrition and dietetics, including biological and chemical sciences

  • Academic and study skills needed for science-based degree study

  • Foundational concepts in human biology and nutrition science

  • Approaches to coursework, practical tasks, and scientific reasoning

  • Preparation for the first year of the honours degree, which introduces areas such as human biochemistry and physiology, nutrition, and professional development for dietetics practice

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the foundation year, students will have developed the scientific literacy and study skills needed to progress confidently into the first year of the BSc (Hons) Human Nutrition and Dietetics degree. They will be able to apply basic scientific concepts relevant to nutrition and human biology, engage with degree-level coursework and practical tasks, and approach academic study with greater independence. This preparation gives students the grounding needed to continue toward a professionally approved dietetics qualification and eventual eligibility to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council.
