Course Description

Overview

Real scientific problems rarely respect the boundaries between disciplines, and a degree that lets students combine subjects on their own terms offers genuine flexibility to follow where their interests lead. The BSc (Hons) Natural Sciences at Durham University is one of the university's most adaptable courses, letting students study two or three subjects drawn from across the sciences and beyond, with at least one studied in real depth. Subjects are organised into three groups, spanning core sciences such as Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics, alongside options including Anthropology, Business, Geography, Philosophy, Sport and Exercise Science and Education. Students can specialise heavily in one subject or split their studies evenly, building on first-year foundations or introducing an entirely new subject as they progress. The course places strong emphasis on high-quality, small-group teaching alongside hands-on practical sessions that mirror real professional work, with a final-year capstone project consolidating independent research skills. It suits students whose interests span multiple fields, including at least one science, and who want to build both breadth and depth of knowledge applicable across a wide range of industries or postgraduate study.

What You'll Learn

  • A minimum of two subjects in the first year, drawn primarily from core science disciplines

  • The flexibility to specialise heavily in one subject or balance your studies evenly across two or three

  • Advanced study in your chosen subjects during the second year, with the option to add a new subject

  • Practical, hands-on sessions offering direct experience of professional scientific work

  • Small-group teaching through seminars, tutorials and workshops alongside traditional lectures

  • Increasing independence and self-directed learning as you progress toward your final year

  • A capstone project in your final year, consolidating your learning across your chosen subjects

  • The option to extend your degree with a year abroad or a placement year after Year 2

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to apply scientific knowledge and methods across multiple disciplines, drawing on both breadth of understanding and depth in their chosen area of specialism. They will be equipped to relate their learning to real-world issues, using critical thinking developed through practical, hands-on coursework mirroring professional scientific practice. Through an increasingly self-directed final year and a consolidating capstone project, students will develop the independent research and project-management skills needed for postgraduate study or professional work. Graduates will leave with a genuinely interdisciplinary skill set, well prepared for careers spanning the sciences and a wide range of other industries and professions.
