Overview
This programme at Plymouth University prepares students to become registered midwives, combining biological and clinical knowledge with substantial time spent supporting women and families through pregnancy, birth, and the postnatal period. Learners develop hands-on expertise across hospital, community, and home-birth settings while building a professional, evidence-based approach to care. Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, graduates will be able to provide safe, effective, and compassionate midwifery care across the full childbearing continuum, from preconception through to postnatal and neonatal support. They will apply evidence-based knowledge of human biology, pharmacology, and public health to assess and manage both straightforward and complex cases. Students will develop the clinical judgement and confidence to work autonomously and within multidisciplinary teams, while engaging in research and quality improvement to strengthen future practice. Graduates will be equipped with the values, knowledge, and competence required for registration as a midwife.
