Course Description

Overview

Exploring the fundamental laws governing the universe, from quantum mechanics and atomic structures to galactic dynamics and cosmology, forms the cornerstone of modern physical science. The Physics BSc at King's College London provides a rigorous grounding in both experimental and theoretical physics, accredited by the Institute of Physics. Delivered within the Department of Physics in the Faculty of Natural, Mathematical & Engineering Sciences, the curriculum balances mathematical modeling, analytical problem-solving, and hands-on laboratory investigation. Students explore core domains including classical mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, quantum phenomena, and relativity, while developing expertise in modern computational tools. Taught by distinguished researchers in a department associated with multiple Nobel Laureates, the program offers flexible pathways including optional study abroad year transfers. This course is ideally suited for analytical, mathematically curious individuals who wish to probe the fundamental mechanics of reality, master computational techniques, and prepare for quantitative careers across scientific research, technology, data science, and finance.

What You'll Learn

  • Core principles of classical mechanics, wave motion, fields, thermodynamics, and kinetic theory

  • Electromagnetism foundations, Maxwell's equations, optics, and electrodynamics

  • Quantum mechanics paradigms, atomic structure, wave function behavior, and subatomic physics

  • Special and general relativity theory, space-time geometry, and astrophysical concepts

  • Mathematical methods for physicists, linear algebra, vector calculus, differential equations, and complex analysis

  • Experimental laboratory techniques, precision measurement, error analysis, and instrument calibration

  • Computational physics methodologies, data analysis algorithms, numerical modeling, and scientific coding

  • Specialized physical applications, including condensed matter physics, nuclear physics, photonics, and particle physics

  • Independent laboratory investigation or theoretical capstone project conducting original physical research

Learning Outcomes

Graduates will possess a comprehensive understanding of theoretical physical concepts, mathematical principles, and experimental methodologies across fundamental domains of physics. They will demonstrate the capability to model complex physical systems, solve multi-variable differential equations, and formulate quantitative scientific predictions. Students acquire strong practical competencies in laboratory experimentation, scientific programming, numerical analysis, and error evaluation through structured laboratory modules and computational workshops. Furthermore, scholars master the ability to communicate technical scientific concepts clearly, present data-driven arguments, and evaluate research literature critically for both specialist scientific audiences and non-technical stakeholders. Through research-informed teaching, accredited study pathways, and capstone research projects, graduates cultivate the intellectual flexibility, logical precision, and analytical agility needed to excel as research physicists, data analysts, systems engineers, quantitative risk consultants, software developers, or postgraduate research scholars.
