Overview

Exploring the universe, from galaxies and black holes to the atmospheres of distant planets, demands a rigorous understanding of the physical laws that govern it. The BSc (Hons) Physics with Astrophysics at the University of Bristol builds a thorough grounding in core physics alongside a strong focus on astrophysics, led by an active research group working on topics such as galaxy evolution and black holes. Students progress from foundational concepts in physics, astrophysics and cosmology toward more advanced areas such as high-energy astrophysics, culminating in a major project or dissertation supervised by a member of the research group. The course suits students drawn to the physical universe on the largest scales, who want to combine strong analytical training with the specialist observational and modelling skills used in modern astrophysics.

What You'll Learn

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to apply core physical principles to explain phenomena across astrophysics and cosmology, from planetary systems to galaxy clusters and black holes. They will be equipped to use observational and theoretical modelling techniques to analyse real astronomical data from major observatories. Through a major final-year project or dissertation supervised by a research-active astrophysicist, students will develop the ability to conduct independent, in-depth scientific investigation. Graduates will leave with strong analytical, problem-solving and technical skills, well suited to further study or a wide range of careers valuing rigorous scientific and quantitative ability.

Requirements

Kuwait: High School / Shahadat Al-Thanawiya Al-A'ama (General Secondary Education Certificate) is not accepted for direct undergraduate entry. Completion of a recognized foundation course (or A-Levels / equivalent qualification) is required
UKVI IELTS (Academic) 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0 (or approved SELT equivalent)
