Overview
The BSc (Hons) Plant Sciences at the University of Bristol explores plants from cellular and molecular processes through to their roles in ecosystems and the wider environment. The foundation stage establishes core knowledge in biology and related sciences, preparing students to investigate plant growth, development, diversity, and function.
What You'll Learn
Plant biology, including structure, growth, development, reproduction, and life cycles.
Cell and molecular biology and their roles in plant function.
Plant physiology, including processes such as photosynthesis, transport, and responses to environmental conditions.
Genetics, evolution, and the diversity of plant life.
Ecology and the relationships between plants, organisms, and their environments.
Plant interactions with ecosystems and environmental change.
Scientific methods for investigating biological processes and interpreting evidence.
Laboratory and practical techniques, experimental design, and biological data analysis.
Research, scientific communication, critical thinking, teamwork, and problem solving.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able to explain key principles governing plant structure, development, physiology, genetics, and ecology. They will understand how processes operating at cellular and molecular levels contribute to the growth and functioning of whole plants and how plants interact with their environments. Students will be able to apply appropriate scientific methods to investigate plant-related questions, collect and analyze data, and evaluate experimental evidence. They will also develop the ability to interpret research findings, assess competing explanations, and use evidence to construct reasoned conclusions. Through theoretical and practical study, students will strengthen their laboratory, analytical, research, and communication skills while developing an integrated understanding of plants and their importance within biological and environmental systems.
