Course Description

Overview

Modern life makes it genuinely difficult to look after our own wellbeing, and understanding the science behind sport, health and nutrition offers real tools to change that, for everyone from schoolchildren to elite athletes. The BSc (Hons) Sport Science, Health and Nutrition at Nottingham Trent University takes a holistic approach, combining sports psychology and physiology with the science of nutrition and its role in exercise performance. Students apply their learning directly with real people through the university's Sport and Wellbeing Academy and live briefs set by partner organisations, gaining genuine work-like experience alongside their studies. The course suits students who want a broad, flexible route into the health and fitness sector, with the option to build in a foundation year or a placement along the way.

What You'll Learn

  • The psychology behind people's behaviour and attitudes towards sport and health

  • The anatomy and physiology underpinning exercise and physical performance

  • The biological function of nutrients and their role in diet and health

  • Sociological and cultural approaches to sport, health and the body

  • Applied nutrition and its relationship to sport and exercise performance

  • Behaviour change, physical activity and public health

  • Practical skills through hands-on work delivering exercise and nutrition programmes to real clients

  • An independent sports research project culminating in a final-year dissertation

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to explain the psychological, physiological and nutritional factors that shape health and sporting performance, drawing on both scientific theory and applied practice. They will be equipped to design and deliver exercise and nutrition programmes tailored to real individuals, having gained direct experience through community and industry-facing work. Through an independent research project and varied practical assessments, students will develop strong skills in research, data analysis and professional communication. Graduates will leave with a well-rounded, practically grounded understanding of sport, health and nutrition, along with the flexibility to pursue further study or a wide range of careers across the health and fitness sector.
