Course Description

Overview:

This course introduces students to the scientific, technical and patient-focused principles involved in therapeutic radiography and cancer care. At the University of Liverpool, learning connects radiotherapy science with patient management, professional practice and research, helping students develop the knowledge and judgement needed to contribute safely and effectively to oncology care.

What You'll Learn:

  • Foundations of radiation oncology and the role of therapeutic radiography in cancer management.

  • Radiotherapy physics, including the scientific principles behind radiation treatment.

  • Radiobiology and how radiation interacts with biological tissues.

  • Radiotherapy technologies and their application in patient treatment.

  • Patient-centred care, communication and the wider needs of people receiving cancer treatment.

  • Clinical preparation, professional responsibilities and safe practice within healthcare environments.

  • Research methods, evidence gathering and critical evaluation of information relevant to radiotherapy.

  • Complex radiotherapy management and the influence of technological and clinical developments on practice.

  • Teamwork and interprofessional collaboration within healthcare settings.

  • Practical decision-making through case-based learning, simulation and clinical skills activities.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course, students will be able to explain the scientific and clinical principles underpinning therapeutic radiography and relate them to the management of cancer. They will be able to apply knowledge of radiotherapy physics, technology and radiobiology to relevant clinical situations while maintaining a strong focus on patient safety and care. Students will also develop effective communication, teamwork, critical-thinking and independent-learning skills. They will be able to gather and assess research evidence, consider how emerging developments may influence radiotherapy practice, and reflect on their own professional development. Through integrating academic knowledge with practical and clinical learning, students will develop the ability to approach patient care thoughtfully, responsibly and with appropriate professional judgement.
