Course Description

Overview

The BSc in Nursing with Registration as a Children's Nurse at King's College London prepares students for professional registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, focused specifically on the care of children, young people, and their families. Teaching combines simulation-based learning in a realistic children's ward setting with clinical placements across hospitals, schools, and community services. The subject matters because it builds the specialised clinical knowledge and compassionate practice needed to support children's health across diverse care settings.

What You'll Learn

  • Foundational knowledge and skills for children's nursing practice

  • The core professional attributes, values, and behaviours required of a children's nurse

  • Family and child-centred care, including concepts of consent and assent

  • Promoting and optimising the health of children and young people

  • Patient assessment methods and the measurement of health needs

  • Psychological theory and its application to nursing practice

  • Optional specialist areas such as neonatal nursing, child protection, or global health

  • Practical clinical skills developed through simulation and placements in hospitals, schools, and hospices

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to assess, plan, and deliver safe, effective, and family-centred nursing care for children and young people across a range of settings. They will be equipped to apply relevant psychological, developmental, and clinical knowledge to understand and respond to the health needs of children and their families. Students will develop strong practical skills through extensive simulation and placement-based learning, alongside professional judgement, interdisciplinary teamwork, and an understanding of equity and diversity in care. These combined clinical and academic competencies prepare graduates to register as a Children's Nurse and begin practising confidently across hospital, community, and specialist care environments.
