Course Description

Overview

This foundation-level programme prepares students for progression into a rigorous undergraduate degree combining pharmacology with modern therapeutic innovation. Delivered by Queen Mary University's academic staff, it builds the scientific grounding across chemistry, biology, and physical science needed for advanced study in drug action and treatment development. The course equips learners with the laboratory literacy and analytical thinking central to biomedical and life science disciplines.

What You'll Learn

  • Core principles of chemical science, including reactions and molecular behaviour relevant to biological systems

  • Foundational biology concepts underpinning the study of living organisms and disease processes

  • Physical science fundamentals that support quantitative and experimental reasoning

  • Mathematics geared toward biological and chemical applications

  • Scientific communication skills for presenting and discussing technical material clearly

  • Broader engineering and scientific problem-solving approaches that complement laboratory-based study

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this programme, students will be able to apply core chemical and biological principles to explain how substances interact with living systems, a key basis for understanding pharmacological mechanisms. They will have developed the mathematical competence and experimental reasoning needed to interpret scientific data accurately, along with the communication skills to convey complex scientific ideas effectively. These outcomes will prepare graduates to enter the first year of a BSc in Pharmacology and Innovation Therapeutics with the scientific foundation and study skills the degree demands.
