Course Description

Overview

The BSc Pharmacology course examines how drugs interact with living systems and how these interactions can influence health and disease. Students build a scientific understanding of drug action, from molecular and cellular mechanisms to effects on the whole body, providing a foundation for understanding the development and use of medicines.

What You'll Learn

  • Core principles of pharmacology and drug action

  • Molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying drug effects

  • Drug-receptor interactions and signalling pathways

  • Pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics

  • The effects of medicines on physiological systems

  • Mechanisms involved in disease and therapeutic intervention

  • Experimental approaches used in pharmacological research

  • Analysis and interpretation of scientific data

  • The principles and challenges involved in developing medicines

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to explain how drugs produce their effects at molecular, cellular and physiological levels. They will understand key pharmacological concepts, including how medicines are absorbed, distributed, metabolised and eliminated, and how drug responses can vary between biological systems. Students will also be able to evaluate scientific evidence, interpret experimental findings, analyse pharmacological data and apply appropriate scientific reasoning to questions concerning drug action and therapeutic use.
