Overview
This programme at the University of Leeds builds a thorough grounding in core physics, spanning topics from thermodynamics through to quantum physics. Students also have the chance to pursue more advanced areas connected to the department's research strengths, from astrophysics to nanoscale and biophysics, with several opportunities to take part in genuine research throughout the degree.
What You'll Learn
Core areas of physics including mechanics, quantum physics, relativity, vibrations and waves, thermal physics, electromagnetism, and solid state physics
Astrophysical principles and the observation of radiation from objects across the universe
The origin and evolution of the solar system
Applied problem-solving across electrodynamics, contemporary physics, and physics for sustainable development
Introductory concepts in artificial intelligence and their growing role in scientific fields such as physics and chemistry
Practical involvement in research, including a group industrial project and a final year research project
Nuclear and particle physics, including atomic structure, radioactive decay, and the Standard Model
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able to apply core physical theories to solve problems across mechanics, thermodynamics, quantum physics, and electromagnetism. They will be able to interpret astrophysical phenomena and contemporary developments in the field, and understand the ethical and practical implications of applying AI in scientific contexts. Students will also gain hands-on experience of research practice, developing the skills to design, carry out, and communicate a substantial independent research project.
