Course Description

Overview

Exploring the fundamental laws governing matter, energy, and the universe provides key insights into physical phenomena from subatomic particles to cosmic structures. The BSc (Hons) Physics with Astrophysics at University of Leeds delivers an integrated education combining core theoretical physics with observational and theoretical astrophysics. Taught within the School of Physics and Astronomy, the curriculum covers classical mechanics, quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, and thermodynamics, alongside specialist astrophysics topics such as stellar evolution, galactic dynamics, cosmology, and astronomical instrumentation. Students benefit from hands-on observational experience using optical and radio telescopes, alongside high-performance computational modeling and laboratory experiments. The degree emphasizes quantitative problem-solving, mathematical physics, Python programming, and data analysis. This program is ideal for curious, mathematically minded problem-solvers seeking to decode cosmic phenomena, master observational astronomy, and develop versatile quantitative skills.

What You'll Learn

  • Fundamental laws of physics, including classical mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, and thermodynamics

  • Mathematical physics methods, vector calculus, differential equations, and linear algebra applications

  • Astrophysics concepts covering stellar atmospheres, stellar evolution, nucleosynthesis, and compact objects

  • Extragalactic astronomy, galaxy dynamics, large-scale cosmological models, and general relativity concepts

  • Observational astronomy techniques, optical and radio telescope operations, and astronomical imaging

  • Data analysis, statistical signal processing, and scientific computing using Python and Linux environments

  • Experimental laboratory physics, measurement precision, error analysis, and instrumentation design

  • Specialist elective pathways covering plasma physics, quantum information, fluid dynamics, and exoplanetary science

  • Independent astrophysics research project involving observational data reduction, computational simulations, or theoretical modeling

Learning Outcomes

Graduates will possess an in-depth understanding of fundamental physics principles, cosmological models, and astrophysical processes. They will demonstrate the capability to construct quantitative physical models, formulate mathematical solutions to complex physical systems, and analyze observational astronomical data using computational and statistical software. Students build strong technical abilities in experimental physics, astronomical observation, Python coding, and error analysis through laboratory exercises and observatory work. Furthermore, learners master the ability to communicate sophisticated scientific findings clearly and persuasively through technical reports, scientific papers, and oral presentations. Through specialized module options and a major final-year research project, scholars cultivate the quantitative rigor and analytical capabilities required to excel in space science, data analytics, software engineering, defense, quantitative finance, or postgraduate astrophysics research.
