Course Description

Overview

Investigating the biological effects of chemicals, the molecular mechanisms of drug action, and the discovery of novel therapeutic agents is central to advancing modern medicine and combating global disease. The Pharmacology BSc at King's College London provides a comprehensive, research-led education delivered within Europe's largest center for medical and professional healthcare education. Taught across the Guy's, Waterloo, and St Thomas' campuses by internationally recognized scientists, the curriculum integrates molecular biology, biochemistry, human physiology, and toxicology. Students explore how drugs interact with specific cell receptors, alter physiological systems, and undergo metabolic transformation within the human body. The program balances theoretical lectures with practical laboratory training, data analysis workshops, and exposure to cutting-edge drug discovery methodologies. Scholars benefit from close links with major pharmaceutical organizations, with flexible degree options allowing transfers to a professional placement year in industry, an extra-mural year abroad, or an integrated four-year MSci degree. This course is ideally suited for scientifically curious, analytical individuals who wish to decode chemical-biological interactions, contribute to biomedical innovation, and pursue high-impact careers in pharmaceutical research, biotechnology, healthcare policy, and clinical drug development.

What You'll Learn

  • Fundamental principles of pharmacology, receptor theory, drug-target interactions, and signal transduction pathways

  • Human organ system physiology, cell biology, biochemistry, and molecular genetics underpinning therapeutic intervention

  • Pharmacokinetics, drug absorption, tissue distribution, metabolic clearance, and elimination mechanisms

  • Molecular toxicology, adverse drug reactions, chemical toxicity mechanisms, and safety assessment protocols

  • Neuropharmacology, cardiovascular pharmacology, immunopharmacology, and cancer chemotherapy principles

  • Modern drug discovery pipelines, lead compound identification, rational drug design, and translational medicine concepts

  • Experimental laboratory techniques, bio-assay methodologies, quantitative data analysis, and statistical modeling

  • Scientific research ethics, regulatory approval frameworks, clinical trial design, and patent evaluation

  • Independent capstone research project conducting empirical laboratory investigation, bio-informatic analysis, or specialized literature synthesis

Learning Outcomes

Graduates will possess an in-depth understanding of pharmacological principles, physiological systems, drug target mechanics, and molecular toxicological frameworks. They will demonstrate the capability to design rigorous laboratory experiments, evaluate drug dose-response relationships, build kinetic models, and analyze complex quantitative biological data. Students acquire robust practical competencies in laboratory assays, cell culture methodologies, biochemical assays, and statistical software applications through interactive practical workshops and independent research projects. Furthermore, scholars master the ability to communicate technical scientific concepts clearly, present data-driven arguments, and critically critique published biomedical literature for both specialist scientific audiences and industry stakeholders. Through research-led teaching and close links to London's biomedical research networks, graduates cultivate the analytical precision, laboratory agility, and intellectual adaptability required to excel as research scientists, pharmaceutical developers, clinical trial managers, toxicologists, regulatory officers, or postgraduate research scholars.
