Course Description

Overview

Legal knowledge shapes how societies resolve disputes, govern themselves and respond to change, making rigorous legal training a genuinely powerful foundation for many careers. The LLB (Hons) Law at the University of Bristol builds a solid grounding in the seven foundations of legal knowledge, taught by academics actively shaping law, policy and practice both in the UK and internationally. Students develop practical skills through the Moot Court, a wide range of student law societies and, in later years, options such as Clinical Legal Studies and a Corporate Law Simulation. The course suits students seeking an intellectually demanding, research-rich degree that prepares them for the Bar Practice Course, contributes toward the Solicitors Qualifying Examination, or opens doors to a wide range of careers beyond law.

What You'll Learn

  • The core legal skills of reasoning, argument and legal research, developed in the first year

  • The seven foundations of legal knowledge

  • Specialist options such as corporate governance, international law, commercial law, environmental law, intellectual property law and human rights law

  • Practical advocacy skills through the Moot Court

  • Real-world legal experience through the Clinical Legal Studies option

  • Deal-based commercial practice through the Corporate Law Simulation

  • How law engages with politics and society through optional socio-legal units

  • Independent legal research through a research project in an area of personal interest

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to think, reason and argue with the rigour expected of a legal professional, applying the seven foundations of legal knowledge to complex problems. They will be equipped to critically analyse legal issues across specialist areas such as commercial, international and human rights law, and to construct well-supported legal arguments. Through the Moot Court, Clinical Legal Studies and an independent research project, students will develop practical advocacy, research and real-world legal skills.
