Course Description

Overview

Legal knowledge carries real influence over how societies function, resolve disputes and hold power to account, making a rigorous legal education a genuinely powerful foundation for many paths. The LLB (Hons) Law at the University of Birmingham lets students tailor their studies toward areas such as commercial law, environmental law and human rights, taught by academics who actively shape law and policy on the global stage. The course is supported by the Centre for Employability, Professional Legal Education and Research, giving students access to mooting, client interviewing, negotiation and around 30 pro bono projects alongside placement schemes with organisations such as the Crown Prosecution Service. It suits students who want an academically rigorous route into law, covering the full range of legal knowledge required to pursue careers as a solicitor or barrister.

What You'll Learn

  • Criminal law, contract law and public law, alongside the ethical and philosophical foundations of legal study

  • Land law, tort law and the legal foundations of the European Union

  • Legal communication, writing and the theoretical underpinnings of legal reasoning

  • Equity, trusts and wills, forming the core of property-related law

  • Specialist optional areas such as commercial law, company law and international human rights law

  • Advocacy and mooting skills, including negotiation, client interviewing and debating

  • Practical, real-world legal experience through pro bono projects and placement schemes

  • Independent research through an optional dissertation on a prescribed legal topic

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to apply core legal principles across contract, tort, criminal, public and property law to analyse complex legal problems. They will be equipped to critically evaluate legal issues in specialist areas of their choosing, from commercial law to human rights, and to construct clear, well-supported legal arguments. Through mooting, client interviewing, pro bono work and placement opportunities, students will develop practical advocacy, negotiation and professional skills mirroring real legal practice. Graduates will leave with the full academic grounding required to pursue qualification as a solicitor or barrister, along with strong analytical and communication skills relevant to a wide range of careers in and beyond law.
