Overview

Understanding how rights are protected, contested and applied across legal systems offers real insight into justice on both a national and global scale. The LLB (Hons) Law with Human Rights at the University of Essex combines a qualifying law degree with specialist training in UK, European and international human rights law, taught within a Human Rights Centre recognised as an international leader in the field. Students engage in genuine advocacy, mooting and client interviewing, gaining real-world legal experience through the Essex Law Clinic alongside lecturers who work directly with the UN and governments worldwide. The course suits students who want to study law specifically through the lens of justice, rights and social impact, with strong preparation for both legal practice and rights-focused careers.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to apply core legal principles alongside specialist human rights knowledge to analyse how rights are protected and applied across domestic, European and international legal systems. They will be equipped to critically evaluate the function of law within its social, political, philosophical and historical contexts, engaging with genuine debates about justice. Through advocacy, mooting and real client work at the Essex Law Clinic, students will develop practical legal and communication skills alongside academic rigour. Graduates will leave with the qualifying academic foundation required for legal practice, well prepared for careers as solicitors, barristers or legal advisers, or in human rights organisations, government, policy research and international institutions.
