Overview:

The MA (Hons) English Language & Linguistics/English Literature at the University of Glasgow brings together the study of language, linguistics, and literature within the humanities. The course provides a foundation for examining how language works, how it is used in society, and how literary texts can be interpreted in their cultural and human contexts.

What You'll Learn:

  • Core concepts and approaches in English language and linguistics.

  • The structure, use, and development of language.

  • Methods for analysing language in social and cultural contexts.

  • Approaches to reading and interpreting English literature.

  • The relationship between language, literature, society, and culture.

  • Critical perspectives used in the study of humanities subjects.

  • Analytical and research-based approaches relevant to language and literary study.

Learning Outcomes:

Students will be able to demonstrate a broad understanding of key ideas in English language, linguistics, and literature. They will be able to examine language systematically, recognise how linguistic practices relate to wider social and cultural settings, and engage critically with literary works. Students will also develop the ability to interpret and compare different forms of evidence, construct reasoned academic arguments, and communicate their analysis clearly.
