Course Description

Overview

Understanding coastal dynamics and biological oceanic systems is essential for managing living marine resources and mitigating climate impacts. Associated with The University of Sydney, this foundation pathway provides students with the fundamental scientific grounding and academic preparation required to examine marine environments. Through an integrated exploration of biological, physical, and chemical processes, learners build the core analytical capabilities needed to investigate life in estuarine, coastal, and open ocean settings.

What You'll Learn

  • Core biological concepts, including cell physiology, genetics, and organismal diversity.

  • Principles of general chemistry, reaction mechanisms, and molecular interactions in aquatic contexts.

  • Fundamental mathematics, statistical techniques, and scientific data interpretation.

  • Academic English communication, scientific report writing, and structured evidence evaluation.

  • Basic concepts of oceanography, marine ecosystems, and coastal environmental processes.

  • Research design methodologies, introductory computing applications, and collaborative data gathering.

Learning Outcomes

By completing this program, students will be able to apply essential scientific principles to evaluate biological and physical phenomena in marine environments. Participants will acquire the skills to execute basic laboratory techniques, analyze scientific datasets, and present research findings through structured written reports and oral presentations. Furthermore, graduates will establish the critical quantitative capabilities, academic language proficiency, and foundational scientific knowledge needed to successfully undertake degree-level studies in coastal and marine science.
