Course Description

Overview

Medicine is a field defined by the constant interplay of scientific understanding, clinical judgement, and human connection. The MB BS Medicine and Surgery at Newcastle University trains students in this balance through a modern, integrated case-led approach, preparing graduates to work as compassionate and skilled doctors anywhere in the world. In the early years, students study medical sciences, clinical skills, ethics and professionalism through a structured series of clinical cases, based primarily on campus but with frequent visits to hospitals and general practices across the region. As the course progresses, clinical placements across a range of hospital and community settings take on a greater role, deepening specialist knowledge and preparing students for real-world practice. Case-led teaching runs throughout, using real clinical scenarios to connect new knowledge with practical decision-making. This degree suits those drawn to a caring, intellectually demanding profession, with built-in opportunities for personal choice through selected components and an extended elective placement, allowing students to shape part of their training around their own interests.

Professional development and increasingly independent clinical responsibility

Specialist knowledge built through placements in varied clinical base units

An eight-week elective, often undertaken in a setting of the student's choice

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to draw on a comprehensive understanding of health, disease and patient care, from foundational medical science through to the complex clinical reasoning needed to manage real patients across hospital and community settings, and will be equipped to critically evaluate evidence and apply it responsibly in practice. Extensive, progressively increasing clinical experience across a series of placements and rotations builds the practical skills, professional judgement and communication needed to work confidently within multi-professional healthcare teams. Students will also have the opportunity to specialise through selected components and an extended elective, allowing them to explore an area of medicine that particularly interests them while developing the reflective, adaptable approach expected of a newly qualified doctor.
