Course Description

Overview

Becoming a safe, compassionate doctor takes both rigorous scientific training and genuine hands-on clinical experience, developed across years of real patient contact. The MBChB (Hons) Medicine and Surgery at the University of Birmingham follows a newly launched curriculum built around the skills modern doctors will need, combining campus-based teaching with clinical skills practice from the very first year. Students train within one of Europe's top clinical education settings, joining a Medical School community alongside pharmacy, biomedical science and nursing students to prepare for today's interdisciplinary healthcare teams. The course suits students committed to a demanding, practically grounded route into medicine, with strong GMC accreditation supporting progression toward a career as a qualified doctor.

What You'll Learn

  • Core medical science and clinical foundations in the first two years, alongside weekly clinical skills training

  • General Practice-based learning, alternating between simulated and real-world clinical settings

  • Internal medicine, surgery and primary care through extended hospital placements in year three

  • Specialist placements in paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, psychiatry and cancer care

  • Acute and chronic care across primary and secondary settings in the final year

  • Prescribing safety, an area where Birmingham students achieve some of the highest national success rates

  • Communication, professionalism and ethical decision-making throughout the course

  • A medical elective and assistantships preparing you for life as a qualified doctor

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to apply core medical science to diagnose and manage a wide range of clinical conditions, drawing on knowledge built progressively from foundational science through to specialist practice. They will be equipped to communicate compassionately and professionally with patients, having developed these skills through extensive placements across primary, secondary and specialist care settings. Through a medical elective and clinical assistantships, students will build the practical judgement and confidence needed to transition into professional practice. Graduates will be eligible for provisional registration with the General Medical Council upon passing the Medical Licensing Assessment, ready to begin foundation training and pursue a wide range of careers in medicine, surgery, research or education.
