Course Description

Overview:

The Music (BMus) course provides a foundation for developing musical knowledge, creative understanding, and practical skills. It introduces students to the study of music while supporting the development of critical awareness and an informed approach to musical practice.

What You'll Learn:

  • Fundamental concepts and principles used in the study of music.

  • Musical analysis and the examination of works, styles, and ideas.

  • Approaches to understanding music within its wider cultural and intellectual contexts.

  • Development of listening skills and the ability to engage critically with musical material.

  • Creative and practical aspects of working with music.

  • Methods for discussing, interpreting, and communicating ideas about music.

  • Independent engagement with musical subjects through research, reflection, and study.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course, students will be able to demonstrate a structured understanding of key musical concepts and apply appropriate terminology when discussing music. They will be able to listen to and analyse musical material with greater critical awareness, identifying relevant features and explaining their significance. Students will also be able to place musical works and practices within appropriate historical, cultural, or intellectual contexts and use evidence to support their interpretations. The course will develop their ability to approach musical questions thoughtfully, connect theoretical ideas with practical or creative activity, and communicate their findings clearly in written or other appropriate forms. Students will gain a stronger foundation for independent study by learning how to investigate musical topics, evaluate information, and reflect on different perspectives within the discipline.
