Course Description

Overview:

Politics and Philosophy BA (Hons) brings together the study of political ideas, institutions and public life with the examination of fundamental philosophical questions. The course develops an understanding of how political systems and concepts can be assessed through careful argument, ethical reflection and critical analysis.

What You'll Learn:

  • Key ideas and debates in political theory and philosophy.

  • The nature of political authority, justice, freedom and rights.

  • Philosophical approaches to questions about knowledge, morality and society.

  • Different ways of analysing political institutions, practices and arguments.

  • Methods for constructing, evaluating and communicating reasoned arguments.

  • Connections between philosophical thinking and contemporary political issues.

  • Approaches to reading, interpreting and critically assessing complex academic material.

  • Independent thinking and structured analysis across both disciplines.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course, students will be able to explain major concepts and debates in politics and philosophy and recognise how different theoretical perspectives approach questions of public and social life. They will be able to assess competing arguments, identify assumptions and evaluate the strength of evidence and reasoning.

Students will also develop the ability to connect abstract philosophical ideas with political questions, while distinguishing between different approaches and viewpoints. They will be able to communicate their conclusions clearly and coherently, using appropriate academic reasoning and evidence. The course will support students in developing an informed and critical perspective on political institutions, values and ideas, alongside a deeper understanding of the philosophical issues that underpin them.
