Course Description

Overview

The BEng (Hons) Aerospace Engineering examines the engineering principles used to design, analyse, and develop aircraft and aerospace systems. Students combine mechanics, materials, aerodynamics, mathematics, and systems engineering to understand how aerospace vehicles operate and how their performance, safety, and design can be evaluated.

What You'll Learn

  • Engineering mathematics, mechanics, and fundamental aerospace principles

  • Aerodynamics and the behaviour of aircraft in flight

  • Aircraft structures, materials, and structural analysis

  • Propulsion systems and aerospace energy concepts

  • Flight dynamics, stability, and control

  • Aerospace systems, instrumentation, and engineering integration

  • Computer-based modelling, simulation, and design methods

  • Manufacturing and engineering processes relevant to aerospace systems

  • Testing, performance analysis, safety, and engineering evaluation

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to apply mathematical, scientific, and engineering principles to aerospace problems and assess the behaviour of aircraft and related systems. They will understand how aerodynamics, propulsion, structures, materials, flight dynamics, and control contribute to aerospace vehicle performance. Students will be able to analyse engineering requirements, use modelling and computational techniques, and evaluate design solutions against relevant technical considerations. They will also develop the ability to interpret experimental or simulated results, investigate engineering problems systematically, and assess factors affecting performance and safety. The course will strengthen their capacity to integrate knowledge across different areas of aerospace engineering, make evidence-based technical decisions, and communicate engineering analyses and design conclusions clearly.
