Course Description

Overview

The BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering explores the principles used to design, construct, analyse, and maintain the built environment and supporting infrastructure. Students develop an understanding of structures, materials, ground conditions, water, and engineering systems while learning to approach complex infrastructure challenges through scientific and mathematical analysis.

What You'll Learn

  • Engineering mathematics, mechanics, and core scientific principles

  • Structural analysis, design, and behaviour of materials

  • Construction methods, materials, and engineering processes

  • Geotechnical engineering and soil behaviour

  • Hydraulics, water systems, and environmental considerations

  • Surveying, measurement, and engineering data

  • Infrastructure, transportation, and civil engineering systems

  • Computer-based modelling, analysis, and design techniques

  • Engineering project development, testing, evaluation, and risk considerations

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to apply mathematical, scientific, and engineering principles to civil engineering problems and assess the behaviour of structures and infrastructure systems. They will understand how materials, loads, ground conditions, water, construction processes, and environmental factors influence engineering design and performance. Students will be able to investigate engineering requirements, develop appropriate solutions, and use analytical or computational methods to assess their effectiveness. They will also develop the ability to interpret technical information and data, evaluate potential risks and constraints, and make reasoned engineering decisions based on evidence. The course will strengthen systematic problem-solving, technical communication, and design skills, enabling students to consider civil engineering challenges from structural, environmental, practical, and wider infrastructure perspectives.
