Overview
The BSc (Hons) Computer Science at the University of Essex develops a broad understanding of computing, software and the principles behind modern computer systems. The course combines programming, algorithms, data, computer architecture and software development, giving students the knowledge and analytical skills to investigate and solve computational problems.
What You'll Learn
Programming concepts, software development and computational problem-solving.
Algorithms and data structures for designing efficient computational solutions.
Computer architecture, operating systems and the fundamental components of computer systems.
Databases and approaches to storing, managing and retrieving information.
Software engineering principles and methods for developing reliable applications.
Mathematics and discrete structures that underpin computer science.
Computer networks, communication technologies and distributed computing concepts.
Research, critical analysis, project development and effective technical communication.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able to apply programming and computational principles to analyse and solve a range of computer science problems. They will understand how software, hardware, data and networks interact within computer systems and be able to select appropriate algorithms and development approaches for different tasks. Students will develop the ability to design, implement, test and evaluate software-based solutions while critically assessing their effectiveness. They will also be able to undertake independent technical research, analyse complex information and communicate computing concepts and project findings clearly.
