Course Description

Overview:

Fine Art BA provides a broad foundation for developing an individual artistic voice while building an understanding of the ideas and contexts that shape contemporary art. Students combine practical exploration with critical study, using creative work to examine subjects, questions and perspectives that have relevance within art and wider society.

What You'll Learn:

  • Practical approaches to drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, video, sound, installation, text and digital forms.

  • Experimentation with materials, techniques and creative processes to develop original ideas.

  • Key developments in modern and contemporary art and their historical and cultural contexts.

  • Critical perspectives on subjects including identity, gender, environmental change, technology and post-colonial thought.

  • Theories that inform contemporary artistic practice, including feminism, posthumanism, new materialism and the Anthropocene.

  • Research methods for investigating artists, artworks, cultural issues and intellectual debates.

  • Ways to develop, document, discuss and present a body of creative work.

  • Opportunities to consider collaborative, socially engaged, site-responsive and curatorial forms of practice.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion, students will be able to plan and produce artwork using a range of appropriate media, processes and techniques while making informed creative choices. They will be able to place their own practice within relevant historical, cultural and contemporary contexts, drawing on research and critical theory to support their ideas. Students will also develop the ability to assess their work thoughtfully, respond to feedback and explain the intentions and development of their creative projects. They will be able to communicate artistic and research ideas through practical outcomes as well as written and verbal discussion. The course will also enable students to approach artistic problems with greater independence, experiment with different methods, and recognise how contemporary art can engage with social, cultural, environmental and technological questions.
