Course Description

Overview

Medical imaging technology plays an indispensable role in modern healthcare, enabling accurate diagnosis and treatment planning for a vast range of clinical conditions. Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Applied Science (Diagnostic Radiography) at The University of Sydney explore the advanced physical, biological, and technological principles required to capture high-quality diagnostic images. The academic environment pairs rigorous theoretical learning with extensive practical training inside specialized campus simulation laboratories and digital imaging suites. Learners interact directly with expert clinical educators and researchers specializing in modalities such as computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and digital radiography. Integrated clinical placements across public and private healthcare facilities bridge classroom concepts with hands-on patient care. This program suits detail-oriented, compassionate problem solvers who wish to master sophisticated imaging technologies and contribute to vital diagnostic medical teams.

What You'll Learn

Human anatomy, sectional anatomy, and physiological systems relevant to medical imaging

Radiation physics, image formation principles, and radiation safety and protection protocols

General radiography techniques, patient positioning, and digital image acquisition

Computed tomography physics, scanning protocols, and cross-sectional image interpretation

Magnetic resonance imaging principles, safety guidelines, and clinical applications

Digital vascular imaging, fluoroscope, and specialized diagnostic procedures

Ultrasound fundamentals, pediatric radiography, and trauma imaging protocols

Evidence-based clinical practice, healthcare ethics, and medical research methodologies

Professional practice, supervised clinical placements, and inter professional patient care

Learning Outcomes

Graduates will acquire an advanced understanding of imaging physics, human anatomy, and pathology, enabling them to produce optimal diagnostic images while minimizing radiation exposure. They will master the capacity to critically evaluate image quality, adapt imaging techniques to complex patient presentations, and apply rigorous clinical reasoning in high-pressure medical environments. Through extensive clinical placements and practical simulation training, students will build strong technical competence in operating complex imaging equipment, maintaining patient safety, and communicating effectively within multidisciplinary healthcare teams. Furthermore, the comprehensive curriculum equips individuals with the specialized expertise required to satisfy professional registration standards and pursue career pathways across diverse clinical imaging modalities.
