Course Description

Overview

Oral health affects far more than the teeth, shaping nutrition, confidence, comfort and general wellbeing across every stage of life. The Bachelor of Oral Health at Adelaide University is an evidence-based program that prepares students to prevent, identify and treat common dental conditions while promoting healthy habits within the community. Learning is practical from the outset, with early exposure to realistic dental scenarios and case studies. Students build their skills in a dental simulation clinic and in South Australia's dental teaching hospital, and they work through case scenarios in teams. Extensive clinical placements in a range of settings allow them to treat real clients under expert supervision, and a community dental outreach program gives them the chance to provide care to people in need. The program is accredited by the Australian Dental Council. It suits people-focused students who want a hands-on health career, and graduates are equipped for roles in oral health therapy, hygiene and health promotion.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, graduates will understand the structure and function of the human body with particular focus on the oro-facial region, and how oral conditions relate to overall health. They will be able to assess patients, identify common dental problems and deliver preventive, periodontal and restorative care to people from childhood through to older age. Clinical placements and simulation training build technical confidence, while pharmacology and emergency management knowledge supports safe practice. Students learn to apply evidence to clinical decisions, reflect critically on their performance and communicate sensitively with clients and colleagues. They also gain experience in educating patients and promoting oral health within communities, including those with limited access to care. A research project lets them specialise in an area of interest and strengthen their professional profile. Graduates finish with the clinical and professional skills to enter oral health therapy, dental hygiene or health promotion, and to continue into further study or research.
