Overview
Computer Science at The University of Western Australia focuses on the ideas and techniques that make modern software and computing systems work. It links core theory with practical programming, giving students the means to design new technologies or move into specialist areas such as enterprise programming, systems, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, software engineering and research. Students learn to move between abstract concepts and working code. As computing becomes part of nearly every field, understanding how programs are built has become a broadly useful capability, including for those who also study engineering.
What You'll Learn
Programming fundamentals through Python and computational thinking
Object-oriented design and low-level systems programming
Core data structures and algorithms, with further study of advanced algorithms
Discrete structures that support logical and mathematical reasoning about computing
Relational databases and the management of structured data
How computer networks operate and how information travels between systems
An introduction to cybersecurity
Agile methods for developing web applications, and the practices expected in professional software work
Learning Outcomes
On completing the course, students will be able to explain how programming languages and networks rest on theory, algorithms, implementation methods and system design. They will write well-structured programs, select appropriate algorithms and data structures, manage data with relational databases, and build web applications through an agile process. They will also reason carefully about the efficiency and correctness of their solutions. Students will be able to identify security issues in computing contexts and work to professional standards. Graduates will be prepared to help develop emerging technologies, tackle complex programming problems and pursue further research.
