Course Description

Overview

Extracting meaningful insights from massive, complex datasets is critical to guiding strategy and driving innovation across science, industry, and government. Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Science (Data Science) at The University of Sydney examine the mathematical foundations, computational tools, and analytical methodologies needed to transform raw data into actionable knowledge. The curriculum integrates core computer science, statistics, and mathematics with practical domain applications. Learners engage directly with leading researchers and industry experts inside modern computing laboratories and collaborative project spaces. Practical data studios and capstone design projects bridge theoretical learning with real-world problems spanning finance, healthcare, artificial intelligence, and environmental science. This program suits inquisitive, analytical thinkers who wish to combine programming, statistical modeling, and quantitative problem solving to address modern data challenges.

What You'll Learn

Algorithmic problem solving, object-oriented programming, and software design principles

Calculus, linear algebra, discrete mathematics, and optimization techniques

Probability theory, mathematical statistics, and statistical modeling methodologies

Data structures, relational database management systems, and SQL query design

Data wrangling, cleaning, exploratory data analysis, and data visualization strategies

Machine learning algorithms, deep learning models, and predictive analytics

Big data computing, cloud storage architectures, and parallel processing techniques
