Course Description

Overview

The BEng (Hons) Aerospace Engineering at the University of Bristol explores the engineering principles used to design, analyse, and develop aircraft and aerospace systems. The foundation stage builds essential knowledge in mathematics, physics, and engineering, providing a basis for advanced study of aerodynamics, structures, propulsion, and aerospace technologies.

What You'll Learn

  • Engineering mathematics, including calculus, vectors, differential equations, and mathematical modelling.

  • Mechanics and the physical principles governing the motion of aerospace vehicles.

  • Aerodynamics and the behavior of air around aircraft and other aerospace structures.

  • Aerospace materials and the properties required for engineering applications.

  • Structural analysis and the design of lightweight, reliable aerospace structures.

  • Propulsion principles and the systems used to generate thrust.

  • Flight dynamics, stability, control, and the behavior of aircraft in flight.

  • Computer-aided design, computational methods, modelling, and engineering analysis.

  • Laboratory experimentation, practical investigation, teamwork, research, and technical communication.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to apply mathematical, physical, and engineering principles to aerospace problems. They will understand how aerodynamics, structures, materials, propulsion, and flight dynamics contribute to the design and performance of aerospace vehicles. Students will develop the ability to analyze engineering requirements, model physical systems, and evaluate potential design solutions using appropriate analytical and computational techniques. They will also gain practical experience in experimentation, measurement, data analysis, and the interpretation of engineering results. Through theoretical, practical, and design-focused study, students will strengthen their problem-solving, research, teamwork, and technical communication skills while developing an integrated understanding of aerospace engineering and the factors that influence the performance and safety of aerospace systems.
