Course Description

Overview

The BSc (Hons) Applied Anatomy at the University of Bristol explores the structure of the human body and how anatomical knowledge can be applied to understand health, movement, and biological function. The foundation stage develops core scientific and academic skills before students progress to more detailed study of human anatomy and its applications.

What You'll Learn

  • Human anatomy, including the structure and organisation of major body regions and systems.

  • Cell biology and tissue structure as foundations for understanding the human body.

  • Developmental anatomy and changes in body structure across the lifespan.

  • Neuroanatomy and the organisation of the nervous system.

  • Musculoskeletal anatomy and the structures involved in movement and support.

  • Anatomical relationships between organs, tissues, and body systems.

  • Histology and the microscopic study of tissues and biological structures.

  • Practical anatomical investigation, observation, identification, and scientific analysis.

  • Research methods, data interpretation, scientific communication, teamwork, and problem solving.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to describe and interpret the structure and organization of the human body at different levels, from tissues and cells to organs and integrated systems. They will understand the relationships between anatomical structures and be able to apply this knowledge when investigating human function and related biological questions. Students will develop practical skills in observing, identifying, and analyzing anatomical and biological material and will be able to interpret relevant scientific evidence. They will also learn to approach anatomical questions systematically, evaluate information critically, and use research methods to support reasoned conclusions. Through theoretical and practical study, students will strengthen their scientific reasoning, analytical, research, and communication skills while developing a detailed understanding of human anatomy and its practical significance.
