Course Description

Overview

The BSc (Hons) Computer Science (Software Engineering) combines core computing principles with systematic approaches to designing, developing, testing, and maintaining software. Students build a strong understanding of programming and computational methods while learning how software systems are planned, implemented, evaluated, and improved.

What You'll Learn

  • Fundamental principles of computer science and computational thinking

  • Programming languages, algorithms, and data structures

  • Software design, architecture, and development practices

  • Requirements analysis and software specification

  • Object-oriented and other approaches to software development

  • Databases, data management, and software integration

  • Software testing, debugging, quality assurance, and maintenance

  • Version control, collaborative development, and project practices

  • Research, modelling, and evaluation of software solutions

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to apply computer science principles to identify problems and design appropriate software-based solutions. They will be able to analyse requirements, select suitable programming and development approaches, and implement software using structured engineering practices. Students will understand how software is designed, tested, maintained, and evaluated throughout its development lifecycle. They will be able to use appropriate techniques to identify errors, assess software quality, and improve the reliability and effectiveness of systems. The course will also develop their ability to investigate technical questions, evaluate alternative designs, work collaboratively on software projects, and communicate technical decisions clearly. Students will gain an integrated understanding of the relationship between computational theory and practical software engineering.
