Course Description

Overview

Safeguarding digital systems and critical infrastructure against evolving threat vectors is a foundational requirement of modern technological society. The BSc (Hons) Computing Science with Cyber Security at University of East Anglia delivers a balanced blend of software development principles, system architecture, and defensive security strategies. Delivered by active departmental researchers and industry practitioners specializing in fields such as wireless security, Internet of Things resilience, and intrusion detection, the course directly incorporates cutting-edge threat intelligence into academic instruction. Students learn in specialized cyber security laboratories equipped for packet analysis, system defense modeling, and threat simulation exercises. The academic pathway moves systematically from foundational programming and computational mathematics to advanced network protection, secure software engineering, and digital investigation concepts. This program suits analytical problem-solvers eager to combine software engineering capabilities with rigorous defensive engineering expertise. Undergraduates gain versatile coding proficiency, threat surface analysis capabilities, and technical judgment necessary to protect interconnected global software ecosystems.

What You'll Learn

Computational thinking, algorithmic design, and object-oriented programming in multiple languages

Full stack web applications, database management systems, and scalable software architecture

Computer network protocols, hardware architecture, operating systems, and network security

Threat surface identification, packet tracing, malware analysis, and risk mitigation methodologies

Internet of Things security, wireless network protection, and secure software development techniques

Ethical computing standards, privacy considerations, and digital investigation principles

Collaborative engineering practices and an independent capstone software security project

Learning Outcomes

By completing the program, graduates will possess a multi-layered understanding of computational principles, software engineering methodologies, and specialized threat containment paradigms. Students will demonstrate the ability to evaluate complex network architectures critically, identify potential attack vectors, and engineer resilient software solutions using industry-standard tools. Through extensive laboratory exercises and practical design tasks, learners acquire hands-on proficiency in packet analysis, secure coding practices, database management, and system administration. Furthermore, flexible final-year pathways combined with an extensive individual research and development project empower undergraduates to specialize in niche domains like artificial intelligence security or advanced networking, preparing them to engineer secure infrastructure across technology enterprises, security consultancies, public sector bodies, or specialized research institutions.
