Overview
The BVSc Veterinary Science at the University of Bristol develops the scientific, practical, and clinical knowledge needed to understand animal health and veterinary care. The course combines scientific foundations with practical and clinical learning, helping students develop the skills required to assess animal health, investigate disease, and support animal wellbeing.
What You'll Learn
Anatomy and physiology across a range of animal body systems.
Animal husbandry, handling, and species-specific care.
The scientific principles underlying veterinary medicine and animal health.
Disease processes and the body's responses to illness.
Clinical examination, diagnosis, and management of common conditions.
Surgical and other practical clinical skills.
Veterinary communication and professional reasoning.
Case-based approaches to analyzing clinical situations and solving problems.
Practical experience through placements involving farms and veterinary practices.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able to explain the structure and function of animal body systems and apply this knowledge to veterinary problems. They will understand how disease affects animals and develop the ability to investigate clinical conditions through appropriate examination, diagnostic reasoning, and evidence-based approaches to management. Students will gain practical skills in animal handling, clinical examination, and surgical techniques, while developing the professional communication skills required in veterinary settings. They will also be able to analyze clinical cases, integrate scientific and practical information, and make reasoned decisions about animal care. Through hands-on learning and study of scientific and clinical principles, students will develop a comprehensive understanding of veterinary science and the responsibilities involved in caring for animal health and welfare.
