Course Description

Overview

Understanding how chemical agents interact with living systems is essential for discovering novel treatments and improving human health. Offered by The University of Western Australia, this program explores the biological effects of natural and synthetic substances on biological targets. By examining drug actions from the cellular scale to whole-body systems, students investigate the mechanisms driving therapeutic success and toxicological risks.

What You'll Learn

  • Core biological concepts of human anatomy, cell function, and physiological systems.

  • Fundamental mechanisms of drug action, receptor interactions, and signal transduction pathways.

  • Principles of pharmacokinetics, including chemical absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion.

  • Basic toxicological concepts and the safety evaluation of bioactive compounds.

  • Therapeutic applications of pharmaceuticals in treating metabolic, cardiovascular, and neurological conditions.

  • Scientific research design, experimental drug testing, and quantitative data analysis.

Learning Outcomes

By completing this program, students will be able to evaluate the physiological effects and therapeutic potentials of various pharmacological agents. Participants will acquire the capacity to analyze experimental data, interpret dose-response relationships, and assess toxicological outcomes in biological models. Furthermore, graduates will establish a rigorous scientific foundation required for clinical research, pharmaceutical development, and health technology evaluation.
