Course Description

Overview

Some of the smallest organisms have the greatest influence on human health, and a single virus can trigger an outbreak that reaches across the globe. The Bachelor of Biomedical and Health Sciences majoring in Microbiology and Immunology at Adelaide University builds a broad understanding of the body in health and disease, then examines how infectious agents interact with people and how the immune system defends against them. Students learn from internationally acclaimed academics, study anatomy using real human specimens and apply their knowledge through hands-on experiences that include high-tech simulations. Laboratory practicals across the second and third years develop molecular and cellular biology techniques, while a dedicated placement in an industry or research setting adds real-world experience. The major also looks at global public health concerns such as infectious disease outbreaks and the growing threat of antibiotic-resistant and drug-resistant pathogens. The course suits those fascinated by the microscopic world who want a career in health or biomedical science. Graduates gain transferable skills for the sector or for postgraduate study.

What You’ll Learn

Human anatomy and physiology

Health research methods and research skills

Molecules, genes and cells

Microbiology, including bacteria and microbial genetics

Immunology and virology

Virus structure, replication and infection

Infection and immunity

Vaccines, antibiotics and antiviral drugs

Molecular and biomedical science laboratory practice

Global impacts of infectious disease and drug resistance

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, graduates will understand how bacteria, viruses and parasites cause disease and how the immune system responds, from the molecular and cellular level through to individual patients and whole communities. They will be able to explain virus structure and replication, describe how vaccines, antibiotics and antiviral therapies are used to prevent, treat and control infection, and critically evaluate the global challenges posed by outbreaks and increasing drug resistance. Students will apply laboratory techniques in molecular and cellular biology through extensive practical classes, and gain professional experience through a final-year placement in a research or industry setting. These experiences strengthen communication, teamwork, problem-solving and time management, while cross-cultural and First Nations perspectives within the degree support a well-rounded view of health and care. Through electives or a second major, students can also specialise further in preparation for health-related careers or advanced postgraduate study.
