Course Description

Overview

Every human life begins at conception, and understanding how genes, cells and early experiences shape health is one of the most compelling pursuits in modern science. The Bachelor of Biomedical and Health Sciences majoring in Reproductive and Childhood Health at Adelaide University builds a broad grounding in how the body functions in health and disease, then narrows to fertility, pregnancy, birth and childhood development. Students examine real human specimens in dedicated anatomy labs and learn from internationally recognised academics whose teaching is supported by innovative research. Practical learning takes place through lab-based sessions and high-tech simulations, and the program culminates in a work or research placement in a professional setting. Cross-cultural and First Nations perspectives run through the core studies, while electives or a second major allow students to shape their own pathway. The course suits those who are curious about human biology and want to contribute to the future of healthcare. Graduates gain adaptable, transferable skills for a range of health and biomedical careers or for postgraduate study.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, graduates will understand human biology from the molecular and cellular scale through to whole-body systems and population health, and will be able to explain how reproduction, pregnancy and early life events influence long-term health outcomes. They will be able to evaluate reproductive and childhood health issues from both biological and social viewpoints and apply research methods to investigate real-world health questions. Hands-on experience in anatomy and laboratory settings, together with simulations and a final-year work or research placement, develops practical technical skills alongside communication, teamwork, problem-solving and time management. The inclusion of cross-cultural and First Nations perspectives equips students to approach health and care with a well-rounded, global outlook. Students can also specialise further through their choice of electives or a second major, preparing them for health-related careers or advanced postgraduate study.
