Course Description

Overview

Exercise and health science explores the profound impact of physical activity and movement on human physiology, disease prevention, and overall well-being. Studying the BBiomedSc (Hons) Exercise and Health at The University of Western Australia provides students with a scientific foundation in exercise physiology, biomechanics, and health promotion strategies. The curriculum pairs theoretical coursework with practical laboratory training, giving learners direct access to exercise testing facilities, biomechanical analysis tools, and health assessment equipment. Studies cover essential areas, including human movement analysis, cardiovascular adaptation, exercise prescription, and community health interventions. This degree suits active, health-minded individuals passionate about physical performance, chronic disease prevention, and lifestyle medicine. Graduates complete the program fully prepared to promote health, optimize human movement, and work across sports, health promotion, and clinical research settings.

What You'll Learn

Human anatomy, exercise physiology, and metabolic responses to physical activity

Biomechanics of human movement, joint mechanics, and movement pattern analysis

Exercise testing protocols, fitness evaluation, and tailored exercise prescription

Health promotion strategies, behavioral modification, and public health policies

Chronic disease prevention, physical activity for special populations, and rehabilitation principles

Research methodologies, exercise science data collection, and health data interpretation

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion, graduates demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of human movement, physiological adaptations to exercise, and health promotion principles across individual and population levels. Students cultivate the ability to critically analyze biomechanical and physiological data, assess physical fitness, and design evidence-based exercise interventions for diverse populations. Practical laboratory sessions build hands-on skills in operating exercise testing equipment, evaluating movement mechanics, conducting health risk appraisals, and interpreting fitness metrics. Ultimately, learners acquire the versatile knowledge base needed to pursue career pathways such as exercise scientist, health promotion officer, corporate wellness consultant, or entry into advanced clinical movement studies.
