Course Description

Overview

Microbiology and immunology explore the microscopic world of infectious agents and the complex biological defense mechanisms the human body uses to protect itself. Studying the BBiomedSc (Hons) Microbiology and Immunology at The University of Western Australia provides students with a detailed scientific understanding of bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, and host immune responses. The curriculum blends rigorous theoretical instruction with extensive hands-on laboratory experimentation, granting access to state-of-the-art diagnostic tools and research facilities. Learners investigate key subjects, including microbial genetics, host-pathogen interactions, vaccine development, diagnostic microbiology, and histopathology. This course suits meticulous science enthusiasts fascinated by disease mechanisms, public health defense, and biomedical discovery. Graduates emerge fully prepared for professional roles in clinical diagnostic laboratories, public health surveillance, pharmaceutical development, and medical research institutes.

What You'll Learn

Microbial diversity, bacterial physiology, viral structures, and fungal biology

Human immune system architecture, innate and adaptive immunity, and histopathology

Host-pathogen interactions, microbial parthenogenesis, and virulence factors

Diagnostic microbiology techniques, specimen isolation, and pathogen identification

Microbial genetics, genomics, and molecular diagnostic methodologies

Immunological therapies, vaccine design principles, and antimicrobial resistance mechanisms

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion, graduates demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of microbial physiology, immunological pathways, and infectious disease mechanisms across molecular, cellular, and population scales. Students build the capacity to critically analyze microbiological data, evaluate host immune responses, and troubleshoot diagnostic testing protocols using evidence-based frameworks. Practical laboratory training equips learners with advanced hands-on skills in aseptic handling, culturing microorganisms, running immunological assays, and executing molecular diagnostic tests safely. Consequently, graduates acquire the specialized expertise necessary to pursue career paths such as clinical microbiologist, immunologist researcher, public health analyst, or quality control officer in biotechnology and pharmaceutical sectors.
